The most western cape of the Peloponnese was given that name Chelonata because, if you look closely, the hill on which Castle Chlemoutsi sits resembles a turtle and the Castle Fort is its shell. For this reason it was named Cape Chelonata, beginning from the port of Kyllini and concluding at beach of Thines at Vartholomio.

Western Ilia, which is part of the Peloponnese Region, has quite a few beaches to meet the tastes of even the most demanding visitor.

The beaches of Thines Vartholomio, Glyfa, Arkoudi, Kyllini Baths and Kastro (Chryssi Akti) have been named as some of the best in Greece and each year receive a Blue Flag award.
